5 New Year’s Resolutions for a Healthier Mouth in 2020

It’s almost the New Year, which means it’s time to start thinking about your resolutions. You probably have heard of the most common New Year’s health resolutions: going to the gym more, not sitting as much, etc. But what about resolutions that benefit your dental health? Having better oral health has been linked to improved general health. As a result, you can definitely benefit from having a healthier mouth in 2020. Here are five examples of New Year’s resolutions to improve the health of your mouth in the new year.

1. Book a Dental Appointment

If it has been a while since you last saw your dentist, you’re not alone. According to the American Dental Association, about one-third of people in the U.S. don’t visit their dentist yearly. However, doing so can massively benefit your oral health. If your teeth are sensitive or your gums bleed when you brush or floss, it’s high time you see your dentist. Set a reminder in your phone on New Year’s Day to call your dentist on January 2 when they open.

2. Floss Every Day

Brushing alone unfortunately isn’t enough to thoroughly clean your teeth enough to prevent dental health issues like cavities and gum disease. One way to remember to engage in this habit every day is to place your floss on top of your pillow. This way, you can’t go to bed without being reminded to floss.

3. Quit Smoking

Smoking more than doubles your risk for developing gum disease, says the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. On New Year’s Day, get rid of all the tobacco products in your home and tell your friends and family that you’re going to quit so they can hold you accountable. Feel free to visit your dentist or primary care physician if you have trouble staying away from the habit.

4. Cut Back on Sugar

The more sugar you eat, the more likely you are to develop cavities. The easiest way to cut back on sugar is to just reduce the number of sugary foods and beverages you buy. Make some simple substitutions: drink seltzer water instead of soda, and pop in a piece of sugar-free gum when you get the craving for something sweet. It will satisfy your urge and clean your teeth at the same time!

5. Eat a Mouth-Healthy Diet

Dairy products, for example, are rich in calcium, which fortifies your tooth enamel and makes them stronger in the fight against decay. Many fruits and vegetables have a fibrous skin that naturally scrubs your teeth clean as you eat them. They also summon saliva, which washes your mouth out of leftover food particles and germs.

These five New Year’s health resolutions are easy to implement. The hard part is sticking to them every day. You can do it! Just think about how much healthier your mouth will be!
